Matt Dionne
Writer | Producer | Director | Editor

Matt Dionne is an award-winning filmmaker based in Toronto, Canada.
His films primarily fall into the comedy and drama genres — his dramatic films tend to explore themes related to sport, identity, and mental health through gritty realism, while his comedy films often still deal with serious subject matter, but in a much more witty and sardonic way.
He’s received numerous accolades for his writing, including his short script, Athletic Withdrawal, which won Best Concept in the 2023 Paperscreenplay screenwriting competition, and was nominated for Best Dramatic Screenplay at the 2024 Niagara Canada International Film Festival, and Best Short Screenplay at the 2023 New York Screenwriting Awards; and his pilot script, Redwood State, which was a quarterfinalist in the 2020 Screencraft Screenwriting Fellowship competition.
His directorial debut, Athletic Withdrawal, won Best Short Film at the 2024 Reels International Film Festival, Best Director at the 2023 International Motion Picture Awards, Best Drama at the 2023 Iconic Images Film Festival, and Best Actress at the 2023 Carpe Diem Film Festival. It was also nominated for Best Drama at the 2024 Niagara Canada International Film Festival, Best Short Narrative at the 2024 ORION International Film Festival, and Best Actress at the 2023 Chatham-Kent International Film Festival.
He has produced several award-winning films, including Out of the Equation, which won the Bison’s Choice Award at the 2024 Bloomington Indiana Film Festival, and was nominated for Best North American Short Drama at the 2024 Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival; and UnMatched, which was nominated for Best Comedy at the 2025 Anatolia International Film Festival.
As an editor, one of Matt's strengths is his ability to enhance the emotional depth of a scene. He also excels at using pacing to build tension or create surprise. Visually, he prefers clean, minimalistic cuts - often cutting on action, but he’s also adept at using more experimental, stylized techniques when the project calls for it.
He has edited several award-winning films, including The Package, which won Best Experimental Film at the 2024 Brampton International Nollywood Film Festival, and was nominated for Best Sci-Fi Film at the 2024 Niagara Canada International Film Festival; and Each Other, which won Best Short Drama at the 2023 Onyko Films Awards, and was nominated for Best Short Drama at the 2023 Swedish International Film Festival. He also edited the second season of Sunshine City, which is available to stream on Bell Fibe TV.
He is a graduate of York University’s Screenwriting program, and the Toronto Film School’s Film Production program.
He's also a member of the Ontario chapter of the Director's Guild of Canada.
